Surgically removing the affected part of the digestive or urinary organs generally requires opening the abdomen and imposes a great burden on the patient in various ways. While there is a high level of effectiveness, it is also highly invasive, and time is required for rehabilitation after surgery. Endoscopic surgery has been developed as one means to solve these issues. This method, which can be performed simply by opening several small holes in the abdomen, has the advantage of placing a small burden on the patient. While rehabilitation is also faster, considerable experience is required to perform this method of surgery, which involves a high level of technical difficulty over a small visual field and narrow operative site. For this reason, it is only being implemented at a handful of medical institutions. Endoscopic surgery is being proactively implemented at our medical center.
As examples of endoscopic surgery of the digestive organs, we perform the excision of polyps in the esophagus, stomach, and large intestine, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) of early stage cancer, and endoscopic removal of common bile duct stones, among other procedures. As an example of endoscopic surgery of the urinary organs, we are proactively implementing transurethral enucleation with bipolar system (TUEB) to treat prostatic enlargement.
For the treatment of kidney and urinary stones, we are performing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in an effort to reduce the burden on the patient.
With respect to endoscopic surgery of the digestive organs, we have treated more than 1000 cases of adenoid tumors and early stage cancer with no major complications, relying on accurate diagnoses using image enhanced endoscopy (IEE) through narrow band imaging (NBI) of the stomach, esophagus, and large intestine. Our success rate for endoscopic removal of common bile duct stones is also the highest in the region.
To date, we have successfully treated 120 cases of prostatic enlargement safely over the short term using the latest TUEB technology, and boast one of the highest success rates in the country through this method. We refer to our wide-ranging empirical data from treating over 1000 cases of urinary stone disease through ESWL, and can propose the most appropriate treatment method and period to our patients.
