Our hospital was established in 1908 based on Tokyo Women’s Medical School, founded in 1900, which means we have a history of more than 110 years. During this time, we established disease specific and internal organ specific centers for the first time in Japan. We have led the development of various medical treatments, with an interdisciplinary medical examination organization that goes beyond borders between medical departments.
Accordingly, patients who have various complications can receive, without anxiety, advanced medical treatment for a specific disease; this is an outstanding feature of our hospital. Specifically, for each patient with various risks, we arrange a comprehensive team-based medical treatment customized for the patient that combines the strengths of the entire hospital including multiple medical departments, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, rehabilitation staff, and so forth. This system is made possible by having specialties in each medical department, equipment to support these specialties, and experienced, skilled staff.
We currently have about 40 medical departments and a cancer center supported by 15 medical examination departments.

This medical treatment system is a seamless organization that involves not only doctors but also nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, and other co-medicals, and reflects the policy of our hospital. Having gained rich experience over many decades, we are committed to providing international patients with sophisticated, secure team medical treatment not available at other medical facilities. We offer world-class medical treatment in each field, and as a university hospital, we endeavor to develop new treatment methods and apply them to clinical practice. The advanced medical treatments provided by our medical treatment teams may be a new option, particularly for those patients who are hesitant about undergoing difficult surgery because of complications.
We efficiently use various state-of-the-art equipment to perform effective, less invasive cancer treatment. Gamma knife treatment is used for about 500 cases, typically brain tumors, each year. The “Da Vinci” surgery robot ensures high-precision surgery and is used for resections mainly of prostate and renal cancers, and we are planning to use it for lung cancer in the near future. We have performed a great many endoscopic mucosal resections (EMR, ESD) of gastrointestinal cancers. As for liver cancers, we perform radiowave treatment and embolization for endovascular treatments. To perform radiation therapy for various types of cancer, we have introduced intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), which has less effect on normal tissues.
Our Heart Institute provides world-class medical treatment. State-of-the-art endovascular stent grafts and cardiac valve replacements are performed as minimally-invasive procedures employing catheters. We are currently a leading institution both in and outside Japan in the field of treating serious heart failure cases using auxiliary artificial hearts.
In 1991, we started performing live-donor liver transplants, and have now performed more than 100 cases. In addition, we perform 100 to 150 kidney transplants a year, and have achieved world-class results.
We can treat any type of deformation or functional disorder on the body surface. For example, we can provide treatment to confine cicatrices (scars) after ambustion has healed, as well as comprehensive treatment of cicatrices and contractures (contractions) in order to recover from functional disorders.
Our Diabetes Center and Institute of Clinical Endocrinology provide comprehensive lifestyle guidance for preventing lifestyle-related diseases, with instructions from doctors, nurses, dietitians, and so forth. Using advanced medical examination equipment, we customize a program for each patient including exercise and techniques for daily living, including nutrition guidance based mainly on Japanese food.
